Name the change precisely
A firmware update should start with an exact device model, installed version, intended version, and reason for the change. Write those fields before downloading an image. A similarly named router is not enough identification. This guide uses GL.iNet's documented version-4-to-version-4 process as an example; other models and major-version transitions require their own instructions.
GL.iNet directs users to select the router model in its firmware download center and describes a Local Upgrade flow. The same page discusses both upgrade and downgrade. That does not mean every downgrade is appropriate or that this article establishes a safe version choice for your device. Read the relevant release information first. [1]
Prepare access and the maintenance window
Choose a period when users can tolerate a connection interruption. Tell the authorized household or team through your normal coordination process, and avoid beginning just before an important call. Check that someone can reach the router locally if remote administration stops working. A browser tab on a remote laptop is not a recovery path.
Record the current admin address, the method for reconnecting, and the location of the vendor's recovery instructions. Keep credentials in your existing secure storage, not in the worksheet. Record only a reference such as password-manager entry available. Have the correct instructions accessible independently of the router connection.
Understand what the backup does
The vendor documents generating a settings archive through LuCI and explicitly says that the archive applies to the firmware version at backup time, not other versions. Treat a downloaded archive as a version-bound recovery artifact. Do not assume it can be restored into the proposed new release. [1]
Store that archive privately because it contains configuration. Record its filename, backup date, source firmware, and protected location without copying sensitive contents into a shared checklist. Keep a separate plain-language inventory of necessary functions: internet uplink, Wi-Fi, local devices, and any authorized VPN connection. That inventory becomes your post-change checklist.
Worked example: a fictional travel router
In this simulated plan, an owner has a version-4 router and a documented reason to install a newer version-4 release. The model and target image match, but the owner is away and has no local recovery assistance. The worksheet outcome is postpone. A complete download and a settings archive do not resolve that access gap.
At home, the owner schedules the change and tests the current uplink and one local device first. Those observations become the baseline. After installation, the owner records the displayed firmware and repeats the same tasks. The example supplies a decision sequence, not a claim that any specific firmware has been tested here.
Keep reset separate from update
GL.iNet distinguishes a network repair operation from a factory reset; its factory-reset instructions warn that settings and user data are cleared. A reset is therefore a separate decision, not an automatic troubleshooting step after any unexpected result. The documentation also warns against cutting power during the relevant firmware operations. [1][2]
If a required task fails, stop unrelated configuration changes and identify which layer failed: reconnecting to the router, reaching the internet, or using the intended service. Consult the exact model's documented recovery procedure. Mark the change complete only when the version and required tasks are verified. This plan does not guarantee rollback, backup completeness, uninterrupted service, or recovery from a failed flash.
